Brenda Romero Nature Scenes Artist
Nature Scene’s studio is located in our home on Bayou Corne just 5 miles North of Pierre Part, LA. 145 Crawfish Stew Street, Belle Rose, LA
Brenda Romero was born in Eupora, Mississippi and moved to Houston at the age of 12. Graduated from Cypress Fairbanks High School in 1963 and was married in 1964. She has been dabbling in the arts really since a school project during high school. Through the years her interest in the arts has grown steadily, picking up tricks of the trade, from other artists. She moved to Baton Rouge in 1977 where she continued her hobby of painting during the years of raising her 3 children. Brenda considers her style to be self taught also she takes a class whenever she gets a chance. You can always learn from friends and it’s just fun to share the love of painting.
Brenda now works in a variety of mediums, including watercolors, acrylics, oils and fine porcelain china painting. Perhaps her best-known pieces are paintings completed on driftwood in acrylic paints. The challenge of using the characteristics of the wood to become part of the scenery makes it fun. A knothole may be incorporated into a tree trunk, an uneven surface transformed into a turtle’s back, or the silhouette of an egret or heron. Romero’s pieces hold surprises, too. Instead of an alligator patrolling the waters of the basin, you may be as likely to find a pair of gentle frogs taking turns jumping from a cypress knee. Special situations of light, contrasts, and different sky colors makes her excited about painting. She says, “when I don’t have a camera with me, I try to print the image in my brain to remember later”.
Brenda was honored when Ducks Unlimited requested 125 driftwood paintings of native ducks of Louisiana. One went to each of the Louisiana chapters to be auctioned at their annual fund raising Banquets.
Brenda paints on just about anything, mailboxes, glass, china, cans, buckets, saw blades, buildings, hard hats, turtle shells, feathers, boxes, etc. In other words anything immobile, may get painted on. Although she’s not tried her hand at murals Brenda’s very interested in doing murals.
Brenda has been a member of River Region Art Association since 1996, serving as Vice-President in 2001 and President in 2002. She has made many treasured friendships in the art family/gallery. RRAA is a wealth of art knowledge which can be tapped simply by being a a member. This gallery is located in Sorrento, LA at the Cajun Village on the corner of Hwy 22 and Hwy 70. Check out RRAA’s website at www.artgumbo.org.
Nick and Brenda live in the heart of the beautiful bayous and swamps, where they enjoy watching the duck, egrets and other wildlife. They both enjoy fresh and saltwater fishing. The scenery during their many fishing trips lends itself to many interest pictures for Brenda to use for painting ideas. If the fish are not biting, they just pick up pieces of driftwood for painting a story of life in the basin. Nick works hard to prepare the wood by grinding and smoothing it for a good surface for Brenda to paint. He also bleaches it and pressure washes to make sure there are no critters still in the wood. Nick enjoys making things also like shelves, furniture and also likes to carve ducks and egrets. He plans to do more duck carvings when he retires.
Nick and Brenda also have another great hobby, 6 beautiful grandchildren. Between all their hobbies and entertaining Jacob, Chase, Ali, Sam, Laci, Joseph they stay busy. They are happy to receive guests most any time but do request that you call ahead. (985)252-3818
